Rape and sexual violence are seldom discussed in the context of Hamas’ terror attack on Israel. However, in the face of recent terror attacks by Hamas, stories of sexual violence against Israelis are emerging. Reports from victims of Hamas’ terror attack have highlighted the prevalence and devastating impact of sexual violence during the conflict.
Though there are limited reports of rape and sexual violence inflicted by Hamas during the conflict, the stories that do exist illustrate the extent of trauma survivors have experienced. Women were targeted and subjected to a number of horrendous forms of sexual violence, including rape, gang-rape, and sexual assault. Many victims have seen their attackers as members of Hamas wearing masks and carrying firearms. Other victims, however, report that they did not recognize their attackers but believe they were connected to Hamas in some way.
In addition to the physical and psychological damage endured by victims of Hamas’ assault, survivors fear stigma and retribution by Hamas. This further serves to discourage victims from coming forward to seek help due to the risk of retaliation. Unfortunately, this means perpetrators are rarely held accountable and survivors are unable to receive the justice they deserve.
Overall, the true prevalence of rape and sexual violence inflicted by Hamas during its terror attack on Israel is difficult to measure due to the fear of retribution and inadequate reporting. In order to learn the truth and take active steps to end sexual violence, more must be done to ensure victims feel safe to come forward and tell their stories. Without effective measures to promote safety and security of survivors, it is inevitable that sexual violence against Israeli women will continue to occur.
